Updated May 29, 2026

If you want to move your server to a different Minecraft release, you can update the version from the instance dashboard. The new version is applied on the next server start.

Before you change the version

  • Create a backup of your server files and world.
  • Plan for a restart, since the update runs on the next start.
  • Check your plugins and mods for a compatible release.

Change the Minecraft server version

  1. Open your instance dashboard and go to the General section.
  2. Find the Version row and click Edit.
  3. In the dialog, select the version you want to switch to.
  4. Click Save.

What happens next

The next time you start the server, it will update to the selected version. If the server is already running, stop the server and start it again to apply the change.

Notes about downgrading

Downgrading to an older version is generally not supported while keeping the same world. You can downgrade, but you may need to reset the world afterward.

Plugin and mod compatibility

You may need to upgrade plugins and mods manually to be compatible with the new version.
